NEARLY 800 MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS AND TEACHERS TO ATTEND WOMEN IN SCIENCE EVENT HELD ON SOUTHEAST TECH CAMPUS

SIOUX FALLS, SD–
Nearly 800 8th grade girls and their teachers will gather for a Women in Science event at Southeast Tech on Wednesday, March 8 from 9:30 am – 2:00 pm. 30 exhibitors will present technical career paths as well as 29 presenters (in science related occupations) who will make 1/2 hour presentations. The day is structured so that each girl will have the opportunity to hear at least five of the presentations and visit the exhibit room.

The Women in Science Conference is designed to promote a positive image and to stimulate interest in science and technology careers for young women. Women are historically under represented in science and math related fields. While women account for roughly half of the workforce, they hold less than 25% of jobs in these technological areas.

The forum is sponsored by the Women in Science organization which is dedicated to achieving equity and full participation for women in science, mathematics, engineering and technology.  Our objective is to make young women aware of the opportunities available to them and to encourage them to pursue the math and science classes necessary to prepare them for careers in these fields.  One of the best ways to promote students interest is by establishing personal connections with professional women already accomplished in scientific and technological careers.

Young women participating in the Women in Science forum attend presentations by local doctors, veterinarians, pharmacists, zoologists, optometrists, dentists, nurses, ultrasound technologists, nutritionists, chemists, computer analysts, geographers, and engineers.  They also browse through an exhibit area where they do hands on activities and talk one on one with women working in these areas.

The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of the wide variety of jobs available in the math, science and technology fields. When seeds are planted, dreams are born, and goals can be established. By stimulating interest and providing local role models as mentors, incentive is added to continue taking the math and science courses that are necessary to prepare for careers in higher paying non-traditional fields.

About Affordablecollegesonline.org (taken from affordablecollegesonline.org)
Affordable Colleges Online works with students, parents, researchers and subject matter experts from across the globe. Affordable Colleges Online (ACO) began in 2012 with two primary goals:

First: to make college more affordable. Although we can’t pay for tuition bills or offer financial aid directly, we can help students and parents identify colleges, degree programs, scholarship opportunities and more that fit their respective academic and financial wants and needs. Finding higher educational opportunities that hit the cost and quality sweet spot shouldn’t be harder than getting Bigfoot on film.
Second: to spread the importance of accreditation. Whether learning on campus or online, accreditation is a vital component of making sure a student receives a quality education that employers (and other colleges) will accept. With so many non-accredited institutions and degree programs out there, removing them from college search parameters is key.

SOUTHEAST TECH’S LAND SURVEYING SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM ONE OF 10 IN NATION TO RECEIVE COVETED NATIONAL SURVEYING AWARD

SIOUX FALLS, SD–
Southeast Tech is pleased to announce that its Land Surveying Science Technology program is a recipient of the coveted inaugural National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Surveying Education Award. This annual award recognizes surveying programs that best reflect the organization’s mission to advance licensure for engineers and surveyors in order to safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of the public.

According to Land Surveying Science Technology Instructor Rod Breitling, M.Ed., PLS “We are so excited to receive this award. This national recognition as one of the top 10 leading surveying programs in the country that “best reflect NCEES’ mission to advance licensure” is an incredible honor. I believe one of the reasons we were selected was the fact that we are one of few two-year land surveying program in the country in which students can take the ‘Fundamentals of Surveying’ exam at the end of their second year. This is the same exam across the country in which most states require a 4-year degree.”

NCEES awarded a $10,000 prize to ten qualifying programs including Southeast Tech to assist with each program’s continued efforts to promote the importance and value of licensure. The award jury considered criteria such as student outcomes, student involvement, outreach, and recruitment. The award jury met June 23–24, 2016, in Clemson, South Carolina, to select the winners.

Southeast Tech Interim President Rich Kluin shares, “We are pleased to receive this recognition and extremely proud of our Land Surveying Science Technology program, its instructors and our students.  Southeast Tech is committed to maintaining the highest standards for our curriculum and works directly with industry partners to bring expertise and innovation into the classroom.  This honor validates that commitment and dedication to our students and workforce excellence.”

About Southeast Tech’s Land Surveying Technology Program

SOUTHEAST TECH RECOGNIZED 21st OUT OF TOP 50 BEST VALUE COMMUNITY COLLEGES OF 2016

SIOUX FALLS, SD– Southeast Tech is pleased to announce that it has been recognized by Value Colleges in the top 50 best value community colleges in the nation, and the only college to be recognized in South Dakota. Value Colleges has ranked Southeast Tech at number 21 in their 2016 ranking of the Top 50 Best Value Community Colleges!

Value Colleges Information
Using data from College Measures, a Gates Foundation-supported database, we surveyed the 1717 Community Colleges in the US that offer 2-year Associate Degrees. We filtered our results to find schools that met criteria that we here at Value Colleges deem to be most relevant in finding the Best Value Community College: average to high graduation rates (over 45%), low-to-average cost (under $10k per year), over 1,000 enrolled students, and AACC membership. All our schools are public and open admission.
Our initial list had 614 institutions meeting our criteria. The top 50 ranking is derived from the highest scoring schools based on three metrics:
• Graduation/Transfer rate (IPEDS database)
• Mid-level salary for graduates (when applicable/from payscale.com)
• Actual tuition (IPEDS database)

These numbers give us a complete impression of how much each community college is worth, from cost to return. So with no further ado, we are proud to present the Value Colleges Top 50 Best Value Community Colleges of 2016. *

According to Carrie Sealey-Morris, Editor of Value Colleges, “With tuition prices at four-year universities on the rise, community colleges are an essential part of getting America's workers, technicians, and professionals the education they need at a price they can afford. But there are few reliable nation-wide surveys of community colleges, a problem that Value Colleges would like to correct. The Best Value ranking considers only regionally accredited institutions and ranks them according to our own formula, taking into account graduation and transfer rates, mid-level salaries for graduates, and actual cost.”

Southeast Tech President Jeff Holcomb shared, “Southeast Tech has proven over and over that it offers critically-needed career-building education that is accessible, attainable and affordable for our constituents. Our graduates are vital for our economy and enriching our communities and this honor only solidifies the fact that Southeast Tech is not only an asset for South Dakotans, but a wonderful option for higher education. We are very proud to receive this distinguished award!”

NEARLY 750 MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS and TEACHERS TO ATTEND WOMEN IN SCIENCE EVENT HELD ON SOUTHEAST TECH CAMPUS

SIOUX FALLS, SD– Nearly 750 8th grade girls and their teachers will gather for a Women in Science event at Southeast Tech on Tuesday, March 8 from 9:30 am – 2:00 pm. Governor Dennis Daugaard has proclaimed March 8, 2016 to be observed as ‘Women in Science Day’ in South Dakota.

The visitation day allows students the opportunity to explore campus, discover the different degrees and diplomas offered and meet faculty as well as talk with Student Ambassadors and Admissions Representatives. In addition, two $1,000 Tech Ed Works scholarships will be awarded to two recipients that day. A "Tailgate Party" lunch will be served.

According to Admissions Director Jim Rokusek, “Campus visits are critical to the process of choosing which college is right for you. It is difficult to describe the feeling one has when arriving at a new campus, but there is a feeling, and that is what is important. I have witnessed first-hand when a student loves a campus, or does not love the campus, upon arrival. What I am actually referring to is “fit". While you can find out basically all you need to know about a campus via the Internet, until you visit campus, the actual experience is just an idea. The feeling is very personal, and it is one you need to experience before deciding which school is right for you.”

SOUTHEAST TECH ANNOUNCES NEW SCHOLARSHIP

SIOUX FALLS, SD– Southeast Tech has announced that it has created a new Thomas Sylvester Electromechanical Memorial Scholarship, which will be available in the Fall of 2016.

The family of Thomas Sylvester has donated $3,770 to be dispersed over a four-year period in increments of $1,000 to create a scholarship for students in the Electronics, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering and Electrician. Thomas (Tom) Anthony Sylvester, was the lead teacher for the Electromechanical Program at Southeast Tech from 1991 to 2008.

According to Institutional Advancement Officer Chellee Nemec, “Their goal is to reach $4,000. Tom taught at Southeast Tech for many years and this is a very meaningful gift that his family chose to support future students. If you would like to contribute to this scholarship fund, please contact the Southeast Tech Foundation.”

About Thomas Sylvester

Tom taught Electro-mechanical theory and Robotics at Southeast Tech from 1990 until his retirement in 2008 due to Parkinson’s Disease.

As a teacher, Tom was noted for his hands on teaching, teaching of team work, and learning-by-doing projects. Some of the projects that his students made included a trebuchet to test physics and use calculus to calculate such things as projection and torque. His students made a robotic dragon that puffed smoke, a machine that grabbed a dollar bill away from a person faster than he could grab for it, a pipe organ using pneumatics, and an electric go cart, among other things. (The go cart was caught on video going down the hall at the Technology Center and running into a wall.) One year students fondly made a T shirt with “Tomisms,” phrases that Tom had frequently used in class for motivating students. Many students were able to advance their careers through their technical education with Tom. Tom’s family has established the Thomas Sylvester Electromechanical Student scholarship in his memory to encourage more students to gain a technical education

SOUTHEAST TECH TO HOLD JUNIOR/SENIOR VISITATION DAY OCTOBER 29

SIOUX FALLS, SD– Southeast Tech has scheduled it’s first 2015 Visitation Day for high school juniors and seniors.

SOUTHEAST TECH’S LPN to RN PROGRAM RECEIVES NATIONAL ACCREDITATION

SIOUX FALLS, SD– Southeast Tech is pleased to announce that the LPN-RN Associate of Applied Science degree has received initial accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, or ACEN. Receiving accreditation from a national accrediting body means that the program has met rigorous required standards; including, meeting criteria for the standards in the areas of mission and administration, faculty, students, curriculum, resources, and systematic program evaluation. The process took nearly three years to complete and was initiated when Southeast Tech introduced the LPN to RN degree.

Southeast Tech Nursing Program Director Kristin Possehl notes, “While all of our RN graduates have obtained employment, graduating from an accredited program provides more opportunities for them. Some health care organizations will only hire nursing graduates of accredited programs. In addition, some organizations will provide tuition assistance for students attending accredited programs. RN graduates will also have more choices for continuing their education in an RN to BSN program. Southeast Tech offers the only LPN-RN AAS program in the southeast region of the state. For the large number of LPN graduates every year, the RN program provides the opportunity to further their path in nursing and expands job opportunities.”

About the LPN to RN Program at Southeast Tech
LPN students with 750 documented work hours can complete the RN program in just one year. The LPN to RN degree is a perfect fit for Southeast Tech LPN graduates or other LPNs who have met the documented work experience required for admission. Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN examination to earn their RN license.

The RN degree is a hybrid program, which is a blend of classroom and online courses and can be started in either the fall or spring semester. Students can work part time as they earn their degree.

Career opportunities include working for hospitals, specialized health facilities, clinics, outpatient care centers, hospice, nursing homes, extended care facilities and private homes. The region’s leading employers are seeking out Southeast Tech graduates. SOUTHEAST TECH EXPANDS VEHICLE FLEET FOR AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS

SIOUX FALLS, SD– In an effort to prepare students for the newest systems and diagnostic challenges that automotive technicians face in today’s industry, Southeast Tech has expanded its fleet of vehicles. These vehicles include:

· Two Toyota Prius

· Two Toyota Camrys

· Two Dodge Chargers

· Two RAM 2500, Diesel

· One Chevy Malibu

The entire fleet of twenty-six cars and trucks, twelve plated for road testing diagnoses, are utilized to train students with hands-on instruction. In addition, dealer level scan tools and diagnostic service manuals are also employed. This diverse fleet of vehicles allows students at Southeast Tech to have the ability to work on a wide range of complex systems that each manufacturer uses.

In addition, Southeast Tech has invested in the exact scan tool that dealers use for Chrysler, Ford, GM and Toyota as well as several generic scan tools such as E Scan Pro, Snap On, and Genesis. This allows students the opportunity to work with multiple levels of diagnostics, and prepare them for dealership and independent repair facilities. Students utilize the same repair manuals that the dealers have for their technicians. Identifix and ALLDATA is used for repair information.

According to Automotive Technology instructor Jason Merritt, this approach gives students a superior training opportunity. “By removing the limitations of training for one manufacture or one type of scan tool, students can complete tasks on most major manufactures on the road today and working on systems that are the latest in 2015.” Funding from federal and state grants have helped make this expansion a possibility.

What Does Plated for Road Testing Diagnoses Mean?
With a large fleet of vehicles, not all can be licensed for student driving. We use our newest cars for road testing, and instructors are able to install bugs and have our students test drive to feel symptoms and diagnose real world problems.

What Automotive Technicians Do
Automotive Technicians may work on many types of vehicles and perform various types of repairs ranging from transmission overhaul to computer systems diagnosis. Some technicians may specialize in certain areas of repair such as drivability or engine repair; others prefer to work with customers, parts or sales.

From March through July the Simulation Lab will be in Chamberlain as an LPN lab. In addition, it will be utilized throughout rural South Dakota to offer CNA training from August through next March. The Mobile Simulation Lab will enable Southeast Tech to provide the same quality of education for rural South Dakota residents as students that experience education on campus. Funding for the Mobile Simulation Lab as well as the LPN and CNA training were funded by a federal TAACCCT Grant.

About the TAACCCT Grant
The South Dakota Allied Health Training Consortium (SDAHTC), a Southeast Tech led consortium group of the state’s four technical schools, Oglala Lakota College, and Sinte Gleska University were awarded a $16.2 million U.S. Department of Labor grant to maximize the development and expansion of innovative training programs in partnership with local health care employers. This award provides the SDAHTC with the funding to expand and enhance 25 training programs over the next two years. Over that period, the consortium will implement strategies to expand and enhance education and training opportunities in health care courses and programs. Emphasis will be placed on serving rural communities and Native American reservations by increasing the number of adults earning certificates, degrees, and diplomas in two years or less; replicating innovative and effective methods for designing and delivering instruction that addresses specific industry needs; and improving the learning outcomes of participants.

The federal TAACCCT grant program provides Southeast Tech and the South Dakota Allied Health Training Consortium with funds to expand and improve their ability to deliver education and career training programs that can be completed in two years or less, are suited for workers who are eligible for training under the TAA (Trade Adjustment Assistance) for Workers program, and prepare program participants for employment in high-wage, high-skill occupations.

NEARLY 650 MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS TO ATTEND WOMEN IN SCIENCE EVENT HELD ON SOUTHEAST TECH CAMPUS

SIOUX FALLS, SD– Nearly 650 8th grade girls will gather for a Women in Science event at Southeast Tech on Wednesday, March 11 from 9 am – 2:30 pm. 36 exhibitors will present technical career paths as well as 39 presenters (in science related occupations) who will make 1/2 hour presentations.
