Southeast Technical College Announces New James Abdnor Center for Advanced Manufacturing
Facility Set to Open Fall 2027

Southeast Technical College (STC) announced plans for its newest expansion: the James Abdnor Center for Advanced Manufacturing, scheduled to open in Fall 2027. The new facility will provide state-of-the-art labs, classrooms and collaborative spaces designed to prepare students for high-demand careers in South Dakota’s largest industry by GDP—manufacturing.
The Sioux Falls School Board officially approved the name of the new center at its Sept. 3, 2025, meeting, honoring the legacy of Senator James Abdnor, a dedicated public servant known for his commitment to education, youth and opportunity.
“Manufacturing accounts for one out of every 10 jobs in South Dakota, and industry needs are only accelerating,” said Dr. Cory Clasemann, President, Southeast Technical College. “The James Abdnor Center will ensure our students are equipped with the skills, experiences and confidence to step directly into these vital careers. This project represents the next step in empowering students and strengthening our workforce.”
The center will enhance STC’s Advanced Manufacturing Technology and Mechanical Engineering programs, offering students hands-on training with cutting-edge tools and methods. As industries evolve with advancements in automation, modeling software and artificial intelligence, the Abdnor Center will serve as a hub for innovation and workforce readiness.
Dr. Fenecia Homan, Vice President of Academics, emphasized the collaborative impact of the new facility:
“Our students learn best when they can apply their skills directly to real-world challenges. The Abdnor Center will provide that environment—a place where industry partners, expert faculty and ambitious learners come together to advance South Dakota’s future.”
Fundraising for the project is well underway, thanks in large part to the support of Senator John Thune’s office and the STC Foundation. Senator Thune, a protégé of Senator Abdnor, played an instrumental role in securing initial funding.
“We are deeply grateful to Senator Thune, his team, and our Foundation for their leadership in making this vision a reality,” added Clasemann. “Their commitment honors Senator Abdnor’s legacy while investing in the next generation of skilled professionals.”
When completed, the James Abdnor Center for Advanced Manufacturing will stand as a symbol of progress, partnership and opportunity—helping Southeast Technical College continue its mission of empowering students through practical, career-focused education.
