As part of Careers in Construction Month, Southeast Tech hosted nearly 200 high school students on campus this week for Construction Career Camp.

The camp, aimed at high school juniors and seniors, featured eight stations offering first-hand experiences. The stations included hands-on activites in: concerte, HVAC, welding, heavy equipment operation, architecture, electrical, plumbing, surveying, drones, civil engineering and carpentry.

By exposing students to different career paths, Southeast Tech is hoping to help fill workforce needs.

“Construction is more than just pounding a hammer and a nail, that there are so many opportunities that are provided in these different construction industries,” says President Robert Griggs.

Associated General Contractors of South Dakota (AGC), Homebuilder's Association of the Sioux Empire (HBASE) also sponsored the event. According to AGC, Sioux Falls is one of the fastest-growing construction job markets in the country, ranking seventh out of 358 metropolitan areas.
