Sports Turf Students Prepare for 2020 State Amateur Baseball Tournament

Southeast Tech students in the Sports Turf Management program are getting a taste of the minor leagues this fall as they help the City of Baltic prepare for the 2020 State Amateur Baseball Tournament. 

Mike Wendland, Baltic City Administrator and Economic Development Director, teamed up with Southeast Tech's Cory Borgen to put together a game plan for the improvements, and the students hit the fields. 

During the second week of the Fall 2019 semester, first and second-year-students spent 40 hours working together to build a new pitching mound that meets the slope requirements of amateur baseball; installed a new pitching rubber, home plate, sodding and edging; as well as aerated and over seeded the field. 

"This was a great learning experience for both our first-year students, who jumped right in; but also for our second-year students who were coming of the heels of a summer internship," said Borgen. "In the end, the project was a success. Mr. Wendland was pleased with the work, and the students left with greater knowledge of teamwork and caring for baseball fields."
