SGA's General Assembly program representatives accept "checks" from this year's top fundraising groups: Architectural Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology & Land Surveying and Surgical Technology. Funds were raised for the Power of One campaign, which supports the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in its research to fight blood cancers in children.

Southeast Tech’s Student Government Association (SGA) raised a record-breaking $2,497.42 in its Power of One campaign for 2020. Formerly called Pennies for Patients, the Power of One campaign raises money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to help fund research to fight blood cancers in children.

Academic groups across campus teamed up and collected pennies, $1 bills, $10 bills and $100 bills over a two-week period. Each group designed its own collection box.

The Civil Engineering Technology and Land Surveying department raised the most money – over half of all funds raised – with $1,334. Second place went to Architecture Engineering Technology with $980; and in third place was Surgical Technology with $52.34. Other participants raised:

  • Early Childhood: $50.70
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology: $39.00
  • IT Info Help Desk and I.T. Department: $25.56
  • Business Programs: $11.25
  • Automotive Technology: $4.57

“SGA raised an incredible amount of money for LLS, and had a lot of fun doing it,” said Southeast Tech’s student activities coordinator Chelsea Reisch. “On behalf of SGA, I’d like to extend a special thanks to the winning program areas. It is because of the great students and employees we have on campus that community service projects like this are a success.”

This year marked the largest amount raised since SGA started doing Pennies for Patients in 2015. Previous year’s totals are:

  • 2019: $1,228.13
  • 2018$1,633.25
  • 2017$1,323.60
  • 2016$900.24
  • 2015$811.89

“We are truly humbled by the generosity of our campus,” Reisch said.

A decorating contest for the collection boxes was also held. The I.T. Help Desk and I.T. department claimed first place with a collection box modeled like a computer. Architectural Engineering Technology took second place in that competition as well, with a clear plastic collection container shaped like the numeral “1.” Third place went to Early Childhood, with a “Pete the Cat” collection box.
