Horticulture, Construction Career Academies Planned for Summer 2024
Southeast Technical College is planning two Career Academy programs for Summer 2024 – one in Horticulture and one in Construction Management. Both options provide high school students paid work experience, college credits and on-the-job training with industry professionals.
“Career Academy is a great way for a high school student to learn more about potential career paths,” said Jason Merritt, Dean of Curriculum and Instruction for Trades at Southeast Tech. “Students earn college credit and also gain real-world, on-the-job work experience as part of the academy”.
For the Horticulture Career Academy, students complete Horticulture Science lecture and lab and earn three credits toward an associate degree in Horticulture Technology or Sports Turf Management.
For the Construction Career Academy, classroom courses include Construction Basics and Print Reading for Construction. Participating students will earn five credits that are applicable to Southeast Tech’s General Construction certificate or associate degree in Construction Management Technology.
With both options, students will interview with industry professionals to secure their acceptance and start on-the-job training. Starting dates will vary by business, as will the rate of pay. Classes begin in May.
