'Access Coaches Get Students Off the Sidelines'

A woman is giving a presentation in a conference room at the Hyatt Regency. She is standing at a podium labeled with the hotel's name and speaking into a microphone. A slide is projected on the screen beside her, displaying the word "Questions?" and her email address, along with colorful speech bubbles containing the word "Thank you" in various languages. She appears to be concluding her talk, and there is a nameplate on the podium identifying her as a speaker.
Marcella Prokop, STC's Director of Access and Workforce Opportunity, presents on access coaching at the HLC conference in Chicago.

Marcella Prokop, Director of Access and Workforce Opportunity at Southeast Technical College, conducted a workshop at the Higher Learning Commission’s (HLC) annual conference in Chicago on April 8. The workshop was titled “Access Coaches get Students off the Sidelines.”

Prokop’s session addressed that English learners and indigenous high school students often lack awareness about the college enrollment process and support services available to them. It highlighted STC’s AWO program that pairs access coaches with multilingual and Native American high schoolers to guide these students through college prep processes. The history of the program, assessment and its results were presented.

The HLC is Southeast Tech’s accrediting body.
