On Sept. 20, the STC Student Sonography Organization raised funds to cure blood cancers by participating in Blood Cancer United’s Light the Night walk in Falls Park. Southeast Technical College’s Student Sonography Organization was one of the top community teams, bringing in over $1,500 in donations to fund cancer research and treatments.

According to its website, “Light the Night is Blood Cancer United’s (formerly LLS) largest community event, where passionate teams representing all areas of the community gather together to bring light to the darkness of cancer. Light the Night welcomes school teams to join us as we gather together to celebrate, honor and remember those touched by cancer. Together, we help fund lifesaving research and critical patient support for blood cancer patients and their families.”

Each participant in Light the Night carried a lantern during the mile-long walk in Sioux Falls. White lanterns represented patients and survivors, gold lanterns represented those who have been lost to cancer, and red lanterns represented those who are there to show support.

Light the Night is open to individuals, corporate groups and community groups. Anyone who wishes to participate is welcome to, and all participants are encouraged to help raise funds for Blood Cancer United to find cures for cancer.

“Everyone with blood cancer deserves a longer, better life. At Light The Night we gather as a community to celebrate, honor, and remember those touched by blood cancers. Companies, community partners, families, and sponsors join to bring light to the darkness of cancer. The funds raised by this community fund life-saving blood cancer research around the world, provide free information and support services, and are the voice for those seeking access to quality, affordable, coordinated care for patients and their families."
