Frequently Asked Questions
You will be provided with a phone app or card access for each entrance as well as traditional keys for your apartment and bedroom doors. Please be careful with these keys as losing one can create a situation in which several doors will require re-keying and multiple keys being replaced. The cost to re-key a door is expensive, and that cost will be added to replace the cost of the lost key and billed to the resident who lost the key.
Fines will be assessed for residents who lock themselves out of their apartment or bedroom. Be aware that a lockout does not constitute an emergency...housing staff will let you into your room at their earliest convenience. Lockout fines will be assigned as follows:
- Lockouts during business hours (Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.) are free of charge
- Lockouts outside of business hours and not on a holiday or campus closure day
- The first lockout is free of charge.
- All other lockouts: $10, increasing in $10 increments per lockout.
- Lockouts on holiday or campus closure day will be a double charge due to staff inconvenience.
Lockout fines will be assigned to a resident's account at the end of each month. All lockout fines should be paid at the STC Business Office, located in The HUB.
Lockout fees can add up quickly. Please remember to take your key with you when you leave your apartment and bedroom.
When repairs are needed, please submit a maintenance request form as soon as possible. Please be as specific as possible with the location and nature of the request.
When residents make a request for repair work, they automatically give authorization for housing staff and/or repair technicians to enter their apartment, whether residents are present or not, to complete the repairs. Housing staff will plan to address the repairs in a timely manner.
Housing residents are welcome to have guests stay overnight in their apartment for a maximum of three nights during any seven-day period. Any non-residents that are determined to be staying for a longer period, or who have developed a pattern of residency, will no longer be welcome in housing and the resident responsible for their presence will be subject to Southeast Tech Housing's judicial system. See the Southeast Tech Housing Student Handbook for more information on overnight guests.
Residents MUST accompany their guests at ALL times. Residents are responsible for the actions of their guests. Guests must follow all STC housing and college policies.
In case of an emergency, contact one of the following: Fire/Police at 911 OR Campus Security at 605-941-9003. Housing Security can be reached in the evening at 605-323-9052. STC housing has a Sheriff’s Deputy on staff at various hours with an office in the Link.
Residents have access to wireless, high-speed internet for personal computers in all areas of the housing complex. Please refer to the I.T. Support Center for system requirements and any other data service questions.
Parking for housing residents is provided free of charge. Residents must register their vehicle with housing staff. A vehicle registration link will be provided to all residents, with a lease, to register their vehicles.
Bicycle racks for resident use are located on the north end of Nicolay Hall and the south end of Andera Hall. Students are encouraged to bring their own locks to secure their bikes to the rack. Bikes are not to be stored in public areas.
Residents are responsible for emptying their trash in dumpsters located at the north and south ends of the apartment complex. Recycling containers can be found in the dumpster areas on the north and south sides of the complex (they are marked "Recyclables Only.") Please sort all cardboard, plastic, aluminum, tin and other recyclable materials and place in these dumpsters.
Laundry rooms are located on the second and third floors of both Andera and Hummel-Nicolay halls, near the elevators. The laundry room is reserved specifically for complex residents. Laundry cost is listed below. Our machines only accept card payments via the PayRange app. Laundry instructions are posted in each of the laundry rooms.
- Washer: $1.25/load
- Dryer: $0.25/15-minutes
Each apartment has its own air conditioning and heating unit. Residents are responsible for determining the temperature of their apartment, but please do not set your A/C below 65 degrees. It is important to remember to turn your air conditioner off during the winter months to avoid damage to the unit.
Each apartment is furnished with a bed, dresser, desk and desk chair for each resident. In addition, there is a couch and dining room furniture. It is the staff's expectation that the furniture provided will remain in each apartment where it was placed. Any damage to the furniture and associated fees will be the responsibility of the residents in the apartment.
Personal grills are not permitted inside or outside the apartment complex
Please help to maintain the lawn by not littering and picking up paper, cans, bottles and cigarette butts.
Do not tamper with fire safety devices and equipment, including smoke detectors. In the event of a fire, call 911 immediately. Be sure to state your name and address. Use the nearest exit and/or the exit farthest from the fire. Wait until fire department officials give you permission to re-enter.
Both Andera and Hummel-Nicolay Halls are designated as no-smoking areas. Designated smoking areas are located at the entrances/exits of the apartments.
You will be alerted to tornado warnings by a prolonged blast from a siren in the community. In case of an approaching tornado, the following procedures should be followed:
- Proceed to the first floor of your building in a quick, orderly fashion.
- Sit in a central area and cover your face with your arms.
- Stay away from windows. Individual and community safety should be a priority of all residents.
Sidewalks will be cleared as soon as possible following snowfall, and each apartment will receive notification when the parking lot needs to be empty to allow for plowing. Fines will be issued for those who are not in compliance with housing instructions regarding the moving of vehicles.
Soda and snack machines are located in the Link.
